The Logo of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church

The following is an excerpt taken from the speech explaining the meaning behind the Logo of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church by Miss Kimberlee Laloo, member of the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church:

" Our logo as shown above, comprises of four main features: the three intertwined rings, the burning bushes, the St. Andrew’s cross and the holy bible. These symbols were each specifically chosen for a different reason.

The three intertwined rings are representative of the Holy Trinity or the Godhead three in one – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Its relevance stems from the Calvinistic spirit of the Presbyterian missionaries namely: John Geddie, John Morton, and Kenneth J. Grant who gave their lives in response to the Great Commission as written in the gospel according to St. Matthew 28:19 which says: ‘Go then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And remember! I will be with you always to the end of the Age’

Meanwhile, the burning bushes was selected to align with the ethos of the Presbyterian Church of Trinidad and Tobago (P.C.T.T.). The PCTT logo holds true to the motto for the Presbyterian Church of Scotland from which we are derived which is “nec tamen consumebatur ”. This is simplified to mean “Yet it was not consumed” and alludes to the biblical description of the burning bush.

It may be apparent that since our church is known as St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Princes Town, that we use the cross of St. Andrew. Andrew was one of the original 12 apostles of Christ, and the brother of another apostle, Simon Peter. Both lived and worked as fishermen in Galilee. He is said to have travelled to Greece to preach Christianity where he was crucified at Patras on an X-shaped cross. To date, he is known as St. Andrew, patron saint of Scotland, Greece and Russia.

Furthermore, the inspiration for the Holy Bible arose from the PCTT logo which showcases this and I thought it would be fitting to personalise our own church with this bible and our church specific cross – the  St. Andrew’s cross in a similar fashion. After all, the Bible is the foundation from which our church was built and from which it continuously grows.

A circular frame was selected for this logo design to epitomize continuity in life. This can take on several different meanings. For example, the inner circle represents our individual study of the bible and strife for self-improvement while the middle circle represents our sharing of our spirituality to the local community. Next, the outer circle represents the divergence of our faith in the wider world/community where we have our voices heard and our own church known.

However, specific fonts used in this logo were as a result of clarity and replicability and nothing more. It is my hope that this logo could be replicated to the choir books, uniforms and even lead to the development of our own church’s website.

Finally, the main logo colours were also carefully selected. The rings are in purple because purple is the colour that is used during two of our main seasons, namely Advent and Easter. Purple is also the traditional colour of royalty, and so some give nod to this as a reason why we use purple during these seasons. Moreover, the blue and gold tones throughout the design reflects the colours of our own St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. We can also assume that the full orange colour of the burning bush alludes to the colour of the Princes Town pastoral region. "

Miss Kimberlee Laloo designed this logo in June 2018.
